Restless – Why Are We Here?

There is a wedding…..there is a feast….all are invited.
But why? Why are we invited? Because we are loved….loved by the King.

Who is the bride? Who is the groom? Do I know them?

What should I wear? What shall I bring? When does it begin?
Who is the King?

Can I bring a friend? Will there be dancing? Will there be cake?

The King lives in a palace with many rooms. This we know about Him.
He is the light and there is no darkness.

Precious stones make the foundations of the city walls in which He lives.

There is jasper and sapphire, chalcedony and emerald, sardonyx, carnelian, chrysolite and beryl, topaz chrysoprase, jacinth and amethyst. There were twelve gates to the city.

Soon it was time….the bridegroom was coming. But the people weren’t sure when. They all just had a feeling when they saw preparations starting to unfold. The flowers were delivered, the linens set in place. The band was setting up now and the dancers had a look about their face.

The gate would be opened soon for all who were ready, to come in.
No date and time was set though. He would surprise us….is all the invitation said.

People came from all nations, all colors and sizes. They came with things they thought precious….to give to a King. Only one thing was required of them, was what the invite said.

The King is a good man, and humble and kind. All that really knew Him, understood what He said. He has a son, but was taken, and nailed to the cross on Calvary where He bled.
Why would we be invited then, to the King’s feast if we did this to His only son?

Mankind heard about the invitation. They saw it on the internet. They heard it on tv. They read it in the paper. They heard their friends talking about it. Some thought it just a joke. Some brushed it off as rhetoric, some thought it all a lie.

All were invited. Celebrities and the common man. Muslims and the Jew. Old and young. Intellectuals and deplorables alike. Wall street gurus and the slumlords of the cities. Rappers and Jazz musicians, artists and dog-walkers. Politicians and the pastors, rabbis and the convict. No matter your family history, ethnicity or religion….all were invited.

Some hadn’t listened to all the details when the invite was sent to them. They got too busy with their lives. They only half believed it. But, if the cool cats were going, they were going to follow too.

Some believed it but just got too busy. They had no time to prepare. They had deadlines to meet and customer orders to fill. They had to take care of their sick, dying mother.

Some thought their lives too wicked and it was easier to enjoy their parties and companions. They enjoyed making love to their many lovers, and shooting up and getting high with their friends. The wild side was where it was at with them. Who has time for a wedding? “My life is a party”, they said.

It was time for the feast…the doors were open….it’s time for those who are ready to come in.
One by one people lined up at the gate and presented the thing so precious to them for the King.

Some brought with them proudly, things that took years to make. It did not get them in.
Some brought recordings of beautiful things they had said and sang. It did not get them in.
Some brought lists of people with their signatures, they prayed for or helped. It did not get them in.
Some brought awards and trophys , showing achievements for mankind. It did not get them in.
Some brought their day planners, and calendars to show how busy they were at their place of worship. It did not get them in.
Some showed their bank accounts, stock portfolios and tax records as proof of charitable giving. It did not get them in.
Some showed knuckles bloody and torn from knocking on doors to evangelize people. It did not get them in.
Some brought their chanting and poses and incense to show their spirituality. It did not get them in.
Some told of their suffering and poverty and lack of worldly things. It did not get them in.
Some showed how worn out their knees and rosaries were from praying to the saints. It did not get them in.
Some showed certificates of baptism, confirmation, and parts of the bible memorized. It did not get them in.

Only few knew what was required. The message to them was clear. The others did not hear or remember or take it serious enough to obey. They thought their works showing a good heart, would give them a pass.

To those bearing gifts they thought were like gold, but had neglected the ONE that had loved them…and offered them a robe, if they laid their hearts down… at the foot of HIS CROSS.

The King said,
“Where is your robe? You have none, you can’t come in! Be gone you have no part of me.”

The others were dressed and ready, with nothing else they did bring. Their hearts had already been given.
The King said,
” You have your robe. I have your crown. Come in my bride, for eternity this banquet shall last. Can I have this dance with you?”

We get a robe, we get a crown, we bear no gifts but our hearts which, when we were called…. was given. In exchange, when we laid it (our broken heart) at the cross…a robe was given.

Thank you Jesus! I will find rest for my restlessness, when I come home.

“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” Revelation 19:7.
