What does Food Have to Do About “IT”?

Honestly, I had no idea about the existence of “Food” Deserts. Basically, the lack of certain foods in a general location. Desert, means an arid region, not to get confused with the misspelling that would be “dessert”, with two “s’s”. That is something you indulge in after dinner, preferably.

I only stumbled upon this term or phrase because I watched a video where it was described. I wanted to know how a company was founded and it was linked to this video where a young woman of color was describing life growing up in the city. She shared her struggle finding an organic avocado, if she ever wanted one.

The “A” in Health stands for the “Avocado.

Something as simple as an avocado could be taken for granted, as in my case, when you live in the suburbs. I can drive my car a few miles in almost any direction to find a supermarket that would stock avocados, even organic ones. I can get to an avocado any day of the week if I wanted to make my guacomole.

I have many choices where I could shop to get my avocado. I can also get strawberries, blueberries, seven different kinds of tomatoes, zucchini, fresh thyme, fresh ginger and cantelope or honeydew mellon. That doesn’t even complete the list of fruits and vegetables available to me almost any given day of the week.

I never thought of this one very important aspect in life to keep our bodies healthy. Food consumption matters. Let’s take the color of our skin out of the conversation (please), which seems to be such a sensitive topic anyway. If you didn’t notice, our cities are burning! Let’s just all start talking about the avocado and how we can make THAT available to everyone.

Each situation is unique so practice understanding.

Not everyone has cars. Not everyone can shop alone, without bringing a carload of kids with them. Not everyone can afford a sitter. Not everyone has a grocery store they can walk to that stocks all they need. Some people have few choices, yet know what they should do about their diet (so don’t judge and preach to them about calories and exercise).

Many food stores are in locations out of reach or not accessable. Can a metro bus or train line take you to the nearest grocery chain supermarket, and wait for you? Supermarket chains or wholefood stores I believe are non-existent in cities but readily available and for the subburbian population.

This discussion about the avocado is not about the color of our skin. Keep race out of my post because I am trying to promote peace here. This is about where we live and affordability. Everyone needs an opportunity to be healthy. We need to find a way to help people get there.

Avocados to your door.

I now buy my fruits and vegetables and other staples that might otherwise be wasted from a company that will ship to my door. I don’t need a car. I don’t need to walk. The food is fresh and good but unacceptable for the supermarket shelves standards or the store owners.

Free ship if you spend a certain dollar amount. It buys me enough groceries for 1-2 weeks for my family of two adults. I buy mostly the produce that is available. You can set your own delivery schedule as far as the number of weeks you want your delivery.

Some food is misshaped or has imperfect markings. None are spoiled or bruised. It is “Imperfect Food” but handled less so will last longer in your fridge too. I have more often than not, found the perfect produce in stores, not as fresh, not as good anyway. I am always cutting away a bruise or a brown spot and disappointed in the taste that is less than fresh.

Nothing brings people together more like food. There is no judgement or animosity in food. I am glad I now have a better understanding of one of the many hardships those living in the urban sprawl and those that are not as mobile and independent as I am have it.

Let’s promote the avocado for better social relations in the USA!
Let’s make sure everyone can have these in their daily diet. Let’s help everyone to afford them and gain access to them.
